STUDENT SERVICE WORK
Faith in Action
“To serve is to reign.” At Archbishop Shaw, we follow the example of Don Bosco by seeing Christ in the young and the poor. Service isn’t just a requirement; it’s part of who we are as Eagles.

Service Requirements
At Archbishop Shaw, we believe our unique talents carry an obligation to care for our neighbors. To live out the Gospel, every student participates in mandatory service projects tailored to his grade level.
Tips for Success:
– Summer Advantage: We strongly encourage students to complete at least 5 hours during the summer. Ideally, all hours should be finished before the first day of school to allow students to focus on academics and athletics.
– Approval: If you are unsure if an organization qualifies as a non-profit, please check with the Office of Youth Ministry before beginning your service.

Serving Others, Living the Gospel
Through these hands-on service experiences, Shaw Eagles develop compassion, leadership, and a sense of responsibility, preparing them to be men of faith and service in their communities.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to commonly asked questions about our student service work program.
How many service hours do I need to complete this year?
The requirements increase as you grow at Shaw:
8th Grade: 5 Hours
9th Grade: 10 Hours
10th Grade: 15 Hours
11th Grade: 25 Hours
12th Grade: 20 Hours
Does every student have to do service?
Yes. At Archbishop Shaw, service is a mandatory part of our Catholic, Salesian mission. It is a practical way to live out the Gospel and share your unique talents with the community.
What is a “non-profit” organization?
A non-profit is an organization that is charitable in nature and does not seek to make a profit. Your service must be performed for an organization that aligns with Catholic Christian values.
Can I count hours spent helping my family or working for a business?
No. Assistance to individual family members, neighbors, or for-profit businesses does not count toward your service requirement, even if the work is unpaid.
What is the “Outside Organization” rule?
At least 5 hours of your annual requirement must be completed at a non-profit organization other than Archbishop Shaw. We want our Eagles to make an impact throughout the broader Westbank and Greater New Orleans community!
When are my hours due?
Summer Hours: Must be logged by August 31.
First Semester Hours: Must be logged by January 31.
Final Deadline: Hours must be completed before your Theology exam.
What happens if I don’t finish my hours on time?
Service is tied to your Theology grade. Failure to complete your hours may result in a zero on your Theology exam.
Seniors: Missing the 4th Quarter deadline will result in the loss of all exam exemptions and may impact your ability to participate in graduation activities.
How do I log my hours?
We use the MobileServe app. Sign in using your school email via the “Sign in with Google” option. You can log hours on your phone or via the web portal.
What should I write in the “Tell Your Story” section?
Be specific but concise (2–4 sentences). Instead of saying “I helped out,” try: “I volunteered at the Giving Hope Food Bank sorting and packing donations. I helped prepare meals for 50 local families as part of their mission to end hunger.“
