SHAW STEM WORKSHOP

Breathe, Build, Discover

A Hands-On Science Workshop for Boys & Girls 6th-8th Grade. November 14, 2026 from 9AM-3PM on the campus of Archbishop Shaw.

This interactive one-day workshop invites young, curious minds to step into the shoes of respiratory scientists and biomedical engineers. Led by Mrs. Crossland—Biology Teacher, Science Department Head, and Science National Honor Society Moderator—students will explore the mechanics of human breathing, collect real-world data, and build their own working lung models to discover the amazing science behind every breath.

What You’ll Learn

Explore Respiratory Anatomy & Mechanics
Discover how the human respiratory system functions from the inside out. Students will explore essential anatomical parts, learn how the diaphragm moves air, and investigate how body recovery works after exertion.
Engineer & Test a Working Lung Model
Put biomedical engineering into practice! Participants will design and build their own functioning lung models, test their performance, and re-design them to optimize air movement and efficiency.
Collect & Analyze Real Scientific Data
Step into the role of a data scientist. Students will estimate exhalation volumes, measure personal respiratory data, graph their findings, and compile a personalized data portfolio to take home.
