Last Saturday, student athletes competed in a regional meet for the newly-formed 2022-2023 Archbishop Shaw Powerlifting team. The team had an excellent showing as they competed against other schools from around the New Orleans area.
Coaches Mike Baiamonte, Beau Briner, and Frank Allelo were instrumental in starting the new group. Based on their previous experiences in other athletic programs, the coaches knew that Shaw was fertile ground.
Senior David Nguyen, who previously competed outside of school, stepped up as he led his fellow teammates and helped to coach them through this new process. “I thoroughly enjoyed coaching the younger lifters,” explains Nguyen, “and I hope to return once I graduate to further cultivate this team.”
David and the wider Shaw community were excited to show their support this past Saturday as the team competed for the first time in the LHSPLA Regional Meet in Covington. Prospects like Trystan Evans, who broke the 800 pound total as a sophomore, are examples of the hard work and dedication this team has shown despite only being formed this year. The Coaches believe that the team is destined for great things in the future.
The team is already preparing for the next season with student athletes hoping to beat their present records. They’re also looking forward to welcoming new members who may be interested in joining the team. Interested athletes may contact Coach Beau Briner at briner4@arcbishopshaw.us to learn more about the team and to sign up.
