In our Chemistry courses, students learn the fundamental principles that govern the physical world, developing an understanding of observable physical and chemical properties from an understanding of the atomic structure.  The classes integrate laboratory experiments and demonstrations in to exploring the nature of the world as well as teaching students essential skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving, and self evaluation.  Through Dual Enrollment Chemistry, Shaw partners with Southeastern Louisiana University to offer college credit for seniors that excelled at Chemistry I.  Through discussions of thermodynamics, Gibbs free energy, entropy and enthalpy, leading students to answer the questions of “why?”.

Pictured below is Mr. Russo instructing his class on the half-life of substances and how to do such calculations followed by a demonstration of cascading reactions, how they work, practical applications, and means of controlling them.
