Below is an outline of the Archbishop Shaw Summer Opportunity in Arithmetic and Reading at Shaw (SOARS) program.
Goal: To offer new students an opportunity in a non-threatening environment to become familiar with the school community and its expectations, while providing a review of basic skills necessary to become successful Shaw learners.
1) To review and practice pre-algebra skills
2) To assist with summer reading requirements
3) To practice the rhetorical processes that will encourage correct sequencing of thought and the need for supporting evidence
4) To promote the Catholic and Salesian culture of Archbishop Shaw High School
Dates: Monday, June 14th – Friday, July 2nd (Three weeks)
Hours: 8:15 AM – 3:15 PM Monday-Friday
Cost: A $100 deposit must be paid prior to June 14th. Any student who attends all 15 sessions will have the deposit refunded.
Location: Room 310 in the Main Building. Drop-off and pick-up should be done at the main entrance to the school, 1000 Salesian Ln.
Dress: Casual, but appropriate. No inappropriate writing or symbols on clothing. No see-through, mesh, muscle shirts or tank tops. Sneakers only – no sandals, crocs or flip-flops. Archbishop Shaw’s grooming and appearance rules (hair, jewelry, etc.) will be followed and can be found in our Student Handbook.
Food: Lunch will be provided from the School Food Service Program, free of charge. Additional snacks will be available for purchase
Supplies: The school will provide all writing supplies (paper, pen, pencils, etc). Students should bring a copy of their required summer reading book and a calculator on June 14th.
Attendance and Decorum: The purpose of the program is to help students be successful at the beginning of their career at Shaw within a limited time frame. Because the program is only 15 days long it is expected that every student will be present every day. Failure to do so will forfeit your deposit. Any student asked to withdraw from SOARS due to disruptive, disrespectful and/or disobedient behavior will forfeit his deposit.
Homework: Students will be asked to complete chapters of their assigned summer reading before each session.
