Dear Archbishop Shaw Family,
I am writing to you today from Steubenville, Ohio in the midst of a very impressive snowstorm! This is something we do not usually see in Louisiana! I am giving a workshop to students at Franciscan University here on the teaching of the Catholic faith in the Salesian spirit. I will return late in the day on Monday. As I spend these days talking about St. John Bosco and his Preventive system of reason, religion, and kindness, I find myself using countless examples from my first few months here at Archbishop Shaw that I have observed among our teachers, administrators, coaches, and staff that exemplify Don Bosco’s spirit. We have much to be proud of in the education we offer here and in the environment we seek to create among our students. Thus, people from all over the country this weekend heard me brag about all of you.
We are in the midst of the Mardi Gras season! The band has already marched in two parades with three more coming up. Congratulations to Guy Wood and all of our students from Archbishop Shaw and the Academy of Our Lady who witness to the pride of the Westbank. I am very proud of them as well as grateful to our parents, assistant directors, and all who have worked to make the music program a success. Don Bosco told us that, “A Salesian school without music is like a body without a soul.” Let us continue to support our students in the fine and performing arts.
With Mardi Gras coming to its fulfillment, we are conscious of our entering into the holy season of Lent. Lent becomes our forty days of preparation for the great Paschal Triduum when we celebrate the passion, death, and resurrection of Our Lord. As passionate as we are about the carnival season, we must be even more passionate about our preparations during Lent. We are asked to do something in three areas during Lent: PRAYER, FASTING, AND ALMSGIVING. How will we as individuals and families prepare for Easter by incorporating these three practices in our lives? Perhaps for prayer we will spend a few minutes every day as a family praying for a specific intention. Perhaps we will go to Mass more faithfully and frequently. For fasting, perhaps we will give up some of the entertainments we do and spend more time together with those we love. For almsgiving, perhaps we can give up something and use the money we save to support a cause or group that is in need. The possibilities are limitless. The call from the Gospel, though, to do this is mandatory. Let us make our preparations during Lent with much dedication and devotion, so that Easter truly becomes our great feast.
Enjoy the Mardi Gras Holiday! Know of my love, prayers, and support for each of you and your families. God bless you!
Sincerely,
Rev. Louis J. Molinelli, SDB
